“Castles” is an introduction to engineering problems around the design of castles. It starts like a naïve bed-time story but it grows fast to complex mathematical modeling.
The position of a castle as well as building its walls have to fulfill a set of geometric constraints. At the beginning simple shapes design is achieved and after that patterns and Cartesian coordinates of specific are taken into account to achieve the desired constraints.
Students have the opportunity to explore more complex parameterized functions families such as parabola and
Hyperbola. Further on, some trigonometry is used to compute angles, heights and slopes from different viewpoints, much in the way it was done historically with catapults and arrows in mind.
