This c-book starts off with the simple observation that numbers can be written in various and diverse ways. It was selected as a starting point for the simplicity behind the domain to allow us to explore more the process of design with the project technology. Key elements behind the philosophy of this c-book are:
- Knowing multiple numerical expressions for the same ‘object’;
- Understanding equivalence of expressions;
- Rewriting numbers and expressions into equivalent numbers and expressions;
Rather than restrict students to certain types and formats of numbers and expressions focus here is on procedural and conceptual fluency and symbol sense (Arcavi, 2005). Also, the aim was to ask students not to provide one excepted answer but to ask a general question, so that students would be enabled to use their own creativity in answering it. We have kept in all the versions of the c-book over all the three cycles to emphasise its developmental nature. Note that specific emphasis has always been on the feedback.
