This c-book unit, aiming at 9th grade students, comprises of a series of four activities around the notion of speed, related to real world data. Behind calculating the speed as distance divided by time, the notion of imprecision in speed and position estimations is a key point in this c-book.
Initiatives, which are manifold, have to be taken in order to overcome the limitations inherent to real world phenomena and reach definitive conclusions despite uncertainty. Being able to validate an hypothesis such as “the car was driving too fast”, or “the truck drove for more than 500 km”, without knowing everything precisely is a goal that is attainable but requires mathematical maturity and creativity on behalf of the students.
