Windmills
Designed and produced by the Greek CoI
The “Windmills” c-book unit was jointly created by 7 members of the Greek CoI, almost all with an expertise in mathematics and math education (secondary education teachers and researchers) except for one who is a teacher in engineering education.
The main idea which guided the design of this c-book unit was to challenge students to explore, identify and use the mathematical concepts underlying the construction and operation of 'Greek Windmills', an integral part of the Greek islands’ scenery which is very familiar to all students (mathematics-in-use). To this end, and exploring the notion of “creativity”, they developed “half-baked instances”. Their idea was to design such artefacts that would invite students both to constructions and deconstructions, allowing in this way the fostering of “unexpected” mathematical ideas that would surprise even the initial designers of the instances.
