WebExpresser
The widget factory Web-Expresser is a tool to support learners by taking their first steps towards an understanding of algebra. It provides an environment were users may produce colored patterns consisting of squared pieces of four different colors.
Afterwards they have to try to find visual equivalents of algebraic formulas for the numbers of pieces in two, three, and eventually an arbitrary number of copies of the pattern. In this way, the learner generalizes slowly by taking one generalization step at a time, visually supported by the patterns and colors.
