Mental Rotation Skills

Designed and produced by the UK CoI

This c-book is a much focussed cbook with 48 pages (in two sections). It only takes around 5 minutes. Timings are stored and are part of the design, although students are not confronted by this time pressure. This cbook can be used from young age to adult age as it trains and measures Mental Rotation Skills (MRS). It could also be used as (online) research instrument by education researchers and psychologists. This is not a typical cbook but was made through collaboration with our Psychology department. We were brainstorming about novel uses of the building blocks widget, and there was a strong desire to have a training/measurement app for Mental Rotation Skills. We used a standard instrument that can be found here.

Congruence and proof

Designed and produced by the UK CoI

This c-book is an interactive version (plus some extras) of part of a chapter from a Japanese textbook. The chapter is about congruence and leads into proofs. It starts of with the three main congruence types. We have not included formal proofs but there are so-called ‘flowchart’ widgets that are related to it. The cbook also uses Geogebra widgets; there is an ‘introduction to Geogebra’ section for new users of Geogebra. The c-book provides:

The ‘not algebra’ book

Designed and produced by the UK CoI

The idea and structure behind the c-book is to design a resource that can help students in early secondary education to appreciate the potential of algebra following a particular pedagogical approach through algebraic generalization. Typically, in such task students investigate figural patterns, identify their structure, and articulate the rules that underpin them in order, for example, to calculate the number of tiles in such a pattern. Aligned with the rest of the moderation strategy of the UK CoI we wanted this c-book to be as closely aligned to the UK curriculum as possible but also have an engaging narrative that could potentially demonstrate the rationale behind algebra and algebraic ways of thinking. The c-book has three sections
